Project Revival

Where Lake Superior and Lake Huron meet on the shores of St. Mary’s River in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, sits the Mill Tower. Built in 1895 it is the last remaining example of Industrial Romanesque architecture in Canada.

Purchased by the BMI Group in 2012, The Mill Tower and adjacent Board Mill are in the process of being designed by the leading Canadian architectural firm Martin Simons Sweers as a vibrant mixed-use, hospitality, office, and institutional, development.

A Relic From the Gilded Age

1900 article in The Canadian Magazine once described the Sault Ste. Marie Pulp and Paper Mill as: “One of the most attractive industrial sites in the country.” noting it’s “stately” character—formed by the architect Edward Francis Head.

Looking over what was once the world’s longest canal and the first to be electrified, Mill Tower, quite literally towers over the Canal District with sweeping views of St. Mary’s river. A landmark being reimagined as a place of journey, return, and rejuvenation by The BMI Group.
